NO NEW DETENTION CENTER IN GILROY!

ICE is trying to build a 4,000-square-foot ICE facility in Gilroy at 7240 Holsclaw Road, just east of Gilroy Premium Outlets. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secured a $26.5 million lease for 24.5 acres over a 20-year period. The unincorporated land is leased by the company Elmwood Capital Group (ECG) 6 LLC, which is a Beverly Hills-entity associated with other detention centers.

We call for the permanent stop of building any Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing or detention facility in or near Gilroy. We urge our elected officials to:

  • Formally oppose any ICE detention facility in or near Gilroy;

  • Refuse the use of any city-owned and county-owned land, resources, or infrastructure in support of such a facility; and

  • Pursue any and all legislative remedies to block or restrict such a facility in our backyard.

For years, Santa Clara County leaders and Gilroy community organizations have fought to pass and defend strong sanctuary protections because they know that the safety of immigrant residents is inseparable from the safety and well being of the whole county. A detention facility would harm the social fabric, economic vitality, and public health of our community. Research has consistently shown that communities located near ICE detention centers experience increased enforcement activity and higher rates of arrests—a pattern that puts immigrant families, mixed-status households, and entire neighborhoods at greater risk.

Join local advocates, Gilroy residents, and the Bay Area community and sign the petition to demand a permanent stop to building any ICE facility in or near Gilroy. The petition signatures will be delivered to local, state, and federal officials, and we will follow up with you for future actions. A detention facility anywhere threatens us everywhere!
